The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore next month will unveil the restored American Freedom Train No. 1 as part of the United States' 250th anniversary.
The AFT No. 1 will be unveiled at the museum on Jan. 12, 2025. The unit was last seen by 7 million Americans during a national tour in 1975-76 as part of the nation's bicentennial celebrations.
It was one of three original steam locomotives that pulled the 26-car train on that tour. AFT No. 1 is the only one of those three still in its original Freedom Train paint scheme of red, white and blue, and soon will be fully restored in Baltimore, according to B&O officials in a press release.
The locomotive's unveiling is part of the kickoff to B&O's recognition of America 250, which will celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary of freedom in 2026. The Jan. 12 event also marks the launch of a year of programs at the B&O leading up to the 200th anniversary of U.S. railroading in 2027, museum officials said.
