Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Today, Burlington Northern Santa Fe marked the 10,000th ethanol carload moved by its Ethanol Express™ unit train service from the Midwest to a Watson, Calif., terminal.
Last October, BNSF launched Ethanol Express, a 95-car unit train designed to help ethanol shippers reduce transit time, improve fleet utilization, and lower inventory and logistics costs. To date, BNSF has moved more than 100 unit trains.
"[The] service efficiently moves ethanol from production areas in the U.S. corn belt to major refiners in the high-consumption area of the Los Angeles basin," said Kevin Kaufman, BNSF group vice president, agricultural products marketing, in a prepared statement.
Ethanol Express has helped shorten Archer Daniels Midland's equipment cycle times in an operating environment that "has been full of tactical challenges," said Craig Huss, president of the shipper's transportation division.
