BART to explore ways to handle increased ridership demand
advertisement
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) recently launched a year-long demand-management study. The goals: identify and analyze ways to manage demand, evaluate the public's acceptance of such strategies, and quantify the impact the strategies will have on revenue and congestion relief.
BART officials will examine several possibilities, including adding a peak-period surcharge in highly congested areas, such as the Transbay Corridor, and Montgomery and Embarcadero stations, as well as reducing fares in less congested areas.
The study will explore options for BART to handle demand in the coming years while the agency searches for funding for long-term capacity expansion projects, such as building a second Transbay Tube and acquiring more rail cars.
