BART nears completion of system-wide renovation

Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) $1.2 billion system-wide renovation program is 95 percent complete. The agency has finished more than 150 projects since the program began in 1995.

Paid for mostly through fare revenue, the program includes rebuilding 439 rail cars, modernizing and replacing ticket vending machines, overhauling and replacing elevators and escalators, and expanding maintenance shops to accommodate more cars.

BART currently is installing new fare gates throughout the system.

In a recent customer-satisfaction survey, 80 percent of passengers said they were satisfied with service — BART’s highest rating since 1996. Passengers acknowledged improvements in on-time performance, train frequency and reliability, according to the surveys.
