Amtrak employee receives safety award

The National Association of Railroad Passengers recently named Amtrak employee J. Wes Wilkins recipient of the 2007 Dr. Gary Burch Memorial Safety Award, which honors individuals who have enhanced passenger-rail safety.

A 30-year railroad veteran, Wilkins works at Amtrak’s Wilmington, Del., maintenance facility and serves as a Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division safety liaison. Wilkins has helped his maintenance unit reduce employee injuries by 63 percent.

The safety award is sponsored by the Burch family, which established the award in 1994 to honor Dr. Burch, who was killed in 1991 after a passenger train derailed in South Carolina.
