ARRC combines freight, passenger functions


Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC) no longer will operate freight trains on one hand while peddling passenger service on the other.

The railroad recently combined its freight marketing and logistics department with its passenger services department, forming a new Markets, Sales and Services Division.

ARRC named Steve Silverstein, vice president of marketing and logistics, as the division's vice president.

"Consolidation of our freight and passenger services will enhance coordination of marketing, transportation services and our sales efforts," said Patrick Gamble, ARCC president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement, adding that the division will lead to greater efficiencies and more consistent marketing efforts.

Gamble also believes the organizational change will help improve freight and passenger train scheduling.

Silverstein, with more than 20 years experience in logistics and transportation management, is one of three certified members of Alaska's American Society of Logistics. He's also a member of Anchorage, Alaska's Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee and Statewide Intelligent Transportation Systems' steering committee.

Meanwhile, in another personnel move, ARCC Aug. 2 named Tim Brady director of corporate development and analysis. He'll be responsible for coordinating business development proposals, corporate plans and special projects.

Brady recently served as manager in charge for Guardsmark Inc. after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in December 1999 — capping a 30-year military career.

Before ARCC Jan. 22 named Gamble president and CEO, he was a U.S. Air Force four-star general, responsible for operations, planning and budgeting of 14 military installations involving 41,000 employees and 400 aircraft.
