Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Association of American Railroads recently released the 2003 edition of "Railroad Facts," which contains Class I statistics and charts for 2002 and prior years — in some cases, as far back as 1929.
Published by AAR's Policy and Economics Department, the more than 80-page book includes information on finances, traffic, operations, plant and equipment, employment and compensation, fuel consumption and cost, and loss and damage for each U.S. and Canadian Class I, Mexico's two largest railroads and Amtrak.
For example, the book states U.S. Class Is moved about 1.8 billion tons of freight and operated more than 20,000 locomotives in 2002.
Non-AAR members can buy one copy of Railroad Facts for $15; two to nine copies for $12 each; and 10 or more copies for $10 each. AAR members can purchase the book for $5 per copy. To order, visit AAR's Web site at www.aar.org.
