Last year, Norfolk Southern Corp. attracted 78 new industries and helped prompt 43 plant expansions along its lines — industrial development worth about $2 billion.

The projects included a $600 million addition to Mercedes-Benz USI’s automobile assembly plant in Vance, Ala. NS also attracted 17 new or expanded plastics-related facilities, as well as a number of grain elevators; cement, chemical, lumber and paper, and steel and food processing plants; and distribution warehouses.

During the past 10 years, the Class I has landed 1,098 industrial development projects worth $24.5 billion. NS’ industrial development department works with state and local economic development authorities to promote sites, develop infrastructure and provide various services, including site layout, engineering and logistics.
