Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

Rail supplier news from HDR, American Industries and L.B. Foster (Oct. 20)

Shown are U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (left) and L.B. Foster General Manager Michael O'Connell touring the company's plant in Dublin, Ohio.

HDR Inc. has been selected by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to lead the next phase of work on the San Diego LOSSAN rail realignment project. HDR will lead the environmental clearance and advanced conceptual engineering. HDR has worked with SANDAG since 2020 on the San Diego regional rail alternatives analysis and conceptual engineering study that set the groundwork for the realignment. Partnering with Mott MacDonald and several other firms, HDR will work with SANDAG to complete federal and California state environmental review processes in 2026 to support the goal of opening the relocated rail line by 2035.

American Industries, a subsidiary of A. Stucki Co. and provider of new and reconditioned rail-car components and systems, announced the hiring of Jason Lhota as general manager. Lhota brings with him more than 20 years' experience in strategic supply chain and operations oversight, most recently with Howe Street Advisors, a business consulting firm in Pittsburgh.

L.B. Foster Co. recently hosted U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio) for a tour of the company’s Dublin, Ohio, facility, where the primary products manufactured onsite include wheel impact load detectors (WILD) and friction management (FM) control boxes. The WILDs help the railroad industry identify unsafe conditions related to rail-car wheels. With data collected by the WILDs, railroads can prioritize maintenance based on type of defect, according to a press release issued by the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) and the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association, of which L.B. Foster is a member.
