Steel manufacturer and recycler Nucor Corp. has joined RailPulse as a shipper industry group member, the freight-car telematics coalition announced yesterday.
Formed in 2020, RailPulse is a coalition of rail-car owners and stakeholders dedicated to improving shipping through a neutral, open-architecture telematics infrastructure that provides real-time information on cars' locations, health and conditions. Nucor is the second shipper industry member to be represented on the RailPulse board, alongside Bunge.
As the largest steel producer in the United States, Nucor operates a significant private rail-car fleet to move raw materials and finished products across its network of mills and facilities, RailPulse officials said. Nucor's decision to join the coalition builds on its ongoing efforts to deploy telematics and apply data across its operations to better monitor rail-car handling and impact events, analyze dwell times, improve asset utilization and proactively detect misuse or damage.
Joining RailPulse provides Nucor a consistent, trusted data foundation that can be shared with railroad partners for better collaboration, said Jason Himmer, general manager of Nucor's logistics group.
"By converting real-time rail-car data into actionable insights — and sharing the appropriate data with supply chain partners through the RailPulse platform — Nucor is working to improve fleet reliability, reduce cost and enable better-coordinated operations with the railroads serving its facilities," RailPulse officials said.
