Ports of Indiana has been awarded a $25 million federal grant to support its planned $32 million expansion of the Jeffersonville port on the Ohio river.
The expansion will include the construction of a new 6,500-square-foot dock and a 22,000-square-foot warehouse designed to improve operational efficiency and expand heavy-lift and breakbulk capabilities, port officials said in a press release. The project will double the facility’s barge-rail transloading capacity, increase the port’s lift capacity from 35 tons to 300 tons and establish the port’s first general cargo facility located outside the floodplain. Work is expected to be completed in 2028.
The grant comes from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. BUILD grants support surface transportation infrastructure projects with significant local or regional impact. USDOT announced the grant recipients on July 7.
“This investment is a major win for Indiana," said U.S. Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.). "Modernizing the Jeffersonville port will strengthen American manufacturing, support Hoosier jobs and keep Indiana at the forefront of logistics and commerce.”
