Tex Mex takes steps to speed traffic, avoid crew-change delays



Earlier this year, The Texas Mexican Railway Co. placed a corridor manager at Union Pacific Railroad's Spring, Texas, dispatching center and revised crew districts from Beaumont to Laredo, Texas, to reduce transit times and prevent delays.

Three Tex Mex employees serve as corridor managers, an around-the-clock position created in April to handle dispatching decisions and prioritize Tex Mex's traffic across a joint line from Beaumont to Robstown, Texas.

To eliminate long crew districts — which included inconsistent crew change points that led to many 12-hour delays — Tex Mex officials re-drew district boundaries in May. Now, the railroad is experiencing 50 fewer 12-hour tie-ups per month, and reducing operating expenses for overtime, crew vans and car hire.

"Transit times have improved 24 percent from May to August and locomotive cycle times have improved 35 percent for the same period," said Tex Mex General Manager Jim Riney in a prepared statement.
