BNSF begins PRB coal moves under Georgia Power contract

Last week, Burlington Northern Santa Fe loaded a 117-car coal train in Wyoming's Powder River Basin (PRB) destined for Juliette, Ga. — the first move tied to the Class I's new long-term low-sulphur coal contract with Georgia Power Co.

BNSF moved the 117-car train to a Memphis, Tenn., interchange with Norfolk Southern Railway, which completed the move to Juliette Dec. 16.

Although the contract isn't effective until Jan. 1, BNSF plans to move several trains between the PRB mine and Georgia power plant before year end to transition the service, according to a prepared statement.

BNSF expects to move 13 million tons of coal annually for Georgia Power, averaging six loaded and/or empty coal trains daily.
