CSX Lines' site offers intermodal option to private vehicle shippers

CSX Lines July 5 launched, an interactive Web site designed to enable private vehicle shippers to check rates, book intermodal service and track shipments.
CSX Lines, which ships vehicles in closed containers designed to protect against salt, seagulls, water and other ocean effects, plans to directly market the service to Alaskan, Hawaiian and Guam consumers — matching the company's West Coast ports. Intermodal moves would be available to and from all three ports, using CSX Lines' 16 ships, 27,000 containers, as well as CSX Transportation's rail service., which represents CSX Lines' first e-business venture, also can be accessed at by clicking on a "ship your vehicle" feature.
"If you're moving from Los Angeles to Hawaii and have a Jeep to take to the islands, for example, nowadays the Internet is the first place you would turn for information," said Brian Taylor, CSX Lines vice president and general manager-Hawaii, in a prepared statement. "Consumers who [use] will see competitive prices and simple solutions to a process that's often seen as complicated for a general consumer not experienced in shipping."
CSX Lines developed the site for less than $2,000, and plans to generate between $900 and $1,000 in revenue for each booked vehicle — relying on the market potential of Alaskan, Hawaiian and Guam consumers who move more than 20,000 privately owned vehicles annually.
