RailPower Technologies ready to sell Green Goat locomotives

Now that Union Pacific Railroad has concluded a successful year-plus Green Goat™ test, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced June 27 it's ready to begin taking orders for the 2,000-horsepower hybrid locomotive.

" We consider the … confirmation of our emissions reduction estimates a considerable success," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. "The Green Goat performed successfully in all applications in which it was used."

Based on UP test feedback, RailPower designed and built a pre-production 1,000-horsepower Green Kid™ locomotive targeted at industrial switching yards. Southern Rail of British Columbia Ltd. is testing the Green Kid in New Westminster, B.C.

RailPower plans to soon produce two more Green Kids and two pre-production Green Goats.

"These locomotives will be used to fulfill anticipated initial orders, and to provide additional demonstration locomotives to help convert expressions of interest into firm orders," said Maier. "The pre-production Green Goats will
also enable us to finalize manufacturing processes and procedures."

Both the Green Goat and Green Kid feature a small diesel generator and long-life battery bank designed to reduce locomotive emissions between 80 percent and 90 percent, and cut fuel consumption about 50 percent compared with conventional diesel-engine locomotives, RailPower said.
In mid-July, Pacific Harbor Line plans to begin a 30-day Green Goat test.
