Toronto Transit Commission completes Line 2 repair, modernization work

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) crews completed significant and complex state-of-good-repair and modernization work during a temporary suspension of subway service between Oct. 10-11.

Service was suspended on Line 2 Bloor-Danforth between the Kipling and Jane stations and St. George and Broadview stations during the planned replacement of one beam and two structural support bearings on the Prince Edward (Bloor) Viaduct. During the beam replacement, crews discovered that one of the concrete pads supporting the beam had deteriorated and also needed to be replaced.

Crews have replaced four similar beams so far this year, with one more repair scheduled before the end of the year.

Additional work completed over the weekend included:

  • Installation of 1,000 feet of communication cable, 3,000 feet of power cable and 3,500 feet of fiber cable between Islington and Royal York stations to support a planned new signaling system on Line 2.
  • Replacement of 10 track-level electrical cable connections.
  • Installation of cables near Kipling Station storage track to support CCTV cameras.
  • Replacement of 2,000 feet of cable that supplies power to Royal York Station.
  • Inspection of tracks and related infrastructure.
