BNSF bestows 'achievement' awards to three short lines

BNSF Railway Co. recently honored three short lines at its 13th annual short-line conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The Class I presented BNSF Shortline Achievement Awards to the Columbia Basin Railroad (CBRW), Louisiana & Delta Railroad (L&D) and Texas Northwestern Railway (TXNW).

The awards recognize short lines’ cooperation and business growth efforts. TXNW significantly increased its agricultural products, chemicals and petroleum products traffic with BNSF; L&D developed a service plan that enabled the Class I to capture a larger share of natural gas traffic, increasing shipments from five to 21 carloads per day; and CBRW capitalized on its location next to the one of the nation’s largest airports to develop new markets and increase traffic, BNSF said.

“BNSF is pleased to honor these short line railroads for their ability to provide intense customer focus, resourcefulness, operational flexibility and a local presence in their communities,” said Pete Rickershauser, BNSF vice president of network development, in a prepared statement.

BNSF interchanges with about 200 short lines, regionals and switch carriers. During 2008’s first eight months, the Class I’s traffic volume with short lines increased an average of 7 percent compared with the same 2007 period.
