Sound Transit to review University of Washington's proposed light-rail route

The University of Washington Regents recently submitted a proposal to Sound Transit recommending a modified route to extend light-rail service to the University District and Northgate.

Sound Transit currently is gathering public input on North Link alternatives outlined in a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement released in November.

"We’re committed to extending Link to the north without a negative impact on the University of Washington’s critical research facilities," said Sound Transit Board Chair Ron Sims in a prepared statement. "Their proposed minor modification to our Montlake route option is promising and warrants a thorough review."

The university is concerned about a West Tunnel route, which could impact research activities. University officials believe the impacts could be remedied or mitigated by the modified route, which an initial assessment determined to be feasible. Sound Transit plans to conduct a detailed study of the university’s proposed route, including engineering, cost, and environmental analyses.
