Anacostia Rail Holdings has tapped David Ferryman as chief operating officer.
A fourth-generation railroader, Ferryman spent the past five years as vice president and senior VP at EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel in Pueblo, Colorado, where he was responsible for operations, safety, marketing and employee engagement. EVRAZ Rocky Mountain is a $1 billion operation and the largest of three domestic producers of rail, principally used by Class Is.
"We are very excited to have Dave join our team. He has held a rare combination of senior posts in operations, technology, finance and business development in and out of the railroad industry—making and keeping connections along the way," said Anacostia CEO Peter Gilbertson in a press release.
Prior to joining Rocky Mountain Steel, Ferryman was VP of engineering at CN from 2005 to 2017 and chief engineer of its southern region in Chicago from 2003 to 2005.
He began his rail career at Burlington Northern Railway (now BNSF Railway Co.) as an intern in 1989. He advanced to project manager in 1992, overseeing BN’s $30 million construction of a freight classification switching yard in Lincoln, Nebraska. Later, he was appointed roadmaster in Alliance, Nebraska.
In 1997, Ferryman moved to the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was assistant superintendent of engineering. A year after CN purchased the IC, he became engineer of the railroad’s Gulf division. In 2000, he became general manager of the Michigan division in Troy.
Ferryman's great, great grandfather John Ferryman was a depot agent for the Great Northern Railway in Wenatchee, Washington. His son William “Henri” Ferryman was superintendent of engineering for the GN in Seattle. David Ferryman’s father, William Ferryman Jr., was chief engineer for BN in Denver.
