Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) recently appointed Gerald Gates vice president of safety and compliance. He will be responsible for the short-line holding company’s inter-regional safety, employee training, and environmental and rule compliance.

Gates most recently served GWI as VP of Rail Link’s Atlantic short lines. He previously held stints as president of the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis — which earned the E.H. Harriman Gold Award in the switching and terminal railroad category in 2002, 2003 and 2004 during his tenure — and VP of CSX Transportation’s mechanical, transportation and customer support departments. Gates also spent 21 years at Conrail serving in various field supervisory positions in the engineering, mechanical and transportation departments.
