In memoriam: Connie Sumara, longtime Chicago Freight Car Leasing executive and former LRIW president

Connie Sumara, who served Chicago Freight Car Leasing Co. (CFCL) for 26 years and was instrumental in the development and growth of the League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW), died March 2.

Sumara's rail career began when she joined CFCL in 1986 as office manager. From there, she worked her way up, managing and leading initiatives in administration, information technology, accounting and customer support. Sumara rose to the position of vice president and director of customer support before retiring in November 2012.

"Her dedication and commitment to make ours a better company will always be very much appreciated," CFCL officials said in a prepared statement. "Her smile and enthusiasm was not only recognized within our company, but within our industry, as well."
Sumara also was a champion of the LRIW, where she held numerous leadership positions, including president.

In retirement, Sumara remained active in the LRIW and also was CFCL's liaison with Illinois Operation Lifesaver.

"She will be sorely missed, but her spirit and energy will live on through the many relationships she built on both a personal and business level during her distinguished career," CFCL officials said.
