Cincinnati Metro has named Paul Grether rail manager for the agency’s new streetcar project.

Grether will oversee streetcar operations, vehicle maintenance, training, street supervision and other functions as required under an operating agreement currently under development between the city and Metro, agency officials said in a prepared statement.

Prior to joining Metro, Grether worked for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), where he managed streetcar development for that city’s 2.7-mile modern streetcar line now under construction. In his role at MARTA, Grether was involved in stakeholder coordination between the city and Atlanta Downtown Improvement District.

Grether also managed the National Environmental Policy Act process, developed a successful grant application and implemented stakeholder decision-making.

In addition, he has experience with Federal Transit Administration grant programs and regulation, has served on the American Public Transportation Association’s streetcar subcommittee and was president of the Southeastern Railway Museum.

Construction began on Cincinnati’s 3.6 mile streetcar line in February. The line will connect key communities in the city’s urban core, according to city officials.
