Yesterday, Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary Richard Davey joined state and local officials to break ground on the Kingston Wind Turbine project at Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Kingston Layover Facility. The 100-kilowatt wind turbine is designed to power 65 percent of the Kingston commuter-rail station’s energy supply.
Funded through a $2.5 million federal Transit Investments Generating Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reductions, or TIGGER, grant, the 120-foot-tall turbine will provide power for the parking lot, station platforms and locomotive plug-ins, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement. Grant proceeds also will cover a second 300-kilowatt turbine to be installed along MBTA tracks in Bridgewater in spring 2012.
The turbine program is estimated to save the MBTA about $100,000 per year in electricity costs, agency officials said.
