WMATA outlines 'ready-to-go' capital projects

advertisement

Add the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to the list of transit agencies outlining their "ready-to-go" capital projects in anticipation of President-elect Barack Obama's economic stimulus package.

Last week, the agency's board endorsed a lit of projects and authorized the staff to respond appropriately to specifics of the legislation after it's finalized. Estimated at $530 million, the endorsed projects originally were identified in November 2008 as unfunded capital needs eligible for federal funding and ready to be implemented within 90 days.

The projects call for replacing, repairing or expanding maintenance facilities; repairing and improving station platforms, escalators, canopies, elevators and credit card readers; expanding security systems and purchasing additional emergency tunnel evacuation carts; procuring maintenance and repair equipment for Metrorail track and rail cars; and replacing deteriorating equipment, such as fare collection machines and signage.
