The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority recorded 410,000 riders on the Fourth of July, the highest level recorded in eight years.

Fare-free rides after 5 p.m. and a boost in train service helped ridership jump 61% compared to last year's holiday, WMATA officials said in a press release.

Smithsonian Station was the busiest station since it's the closest to the National Mall, with 60,000 recorded entries and exits throughout the day.

At Navy Yard-Ballpark Station, 20,000 entries and exits were logged at midday as riders headed to Nationals Park for an MLB baseball game, WMATA officials said.
