WMATA elects new chairman

Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Jan. 17 elected Christopher Zimmerman to serve a year-long term as chairman, effective immediately. He succeeds Decatur Trotter, whose term expired, but will remain a board member representing Maryland.

Zimmerman has represented Virginia on the board since January 1998. He also serves as chairman of Arlington county Board, where he’s been a member since 1996.

A trained economist, Zimmerman formerly served as chief economist and committee director for federal budget and taxation at the National Conference of State Legislatures. He also has varied experience in community and transportation planning.

Also Jan. 17, Jim Graham, who represents District of Columbia, was elected first vice chairman; Cleatus Barnett, representing Maryland, second vice chairman.
