The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority's (SFRTA) Tri-Rail commuter-rail service achieved a new annual ridership record of 4,578,680 rides in fiscal-year 2025, which ran from July 2024 through June 2025. The total surpassed the previous high of 4,465,750 rides set in FY2019.
Tri-Rail ranks fourth overall of 31 U.S. commuter railroads in terms of post-pandemic ridership recovery, Tri-Rail officials said in a press release, citing a recent report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Tri-Rail returned to its 15,000 weekday and 7,000 weekend rides benchmark in February 2024.
Despite the recent ridership success, Tri-Rail is facing funding challenges. A recent Florida state budget included budget cuts to its system.
SFRTA's governing board and executive team are working with state and county government officials to find a long-term funding solution, Tri-Rail officials said. Current financial projections predict the system only has sufficient funds to operate through July 2027.
Tri-Rail operates between Miami Airport and Mangonla Park in West Palm Beach.
