Vancouver, British Columbia-based TransLink on Nov. 1 celebrated 30 years of the West Coast Express, the only commuter-rail service of its kind in western Canada.
The service operates on weekdays during peak morning and evening commute times, stopping at eight stations along the route between downtown Vancouver and Mission City.
In September, the West Coast Express averaged 7,400 weekly boardings, TransLink officials said in a press release. In 2023, TransLink boosted the service by adding a fifth train as part of an ongoing refurbishment of the service's fleet to reduce engine emissions by up to 50% and extend the life of locomotives by 15 years.
By 2024, the West Coast Express fleet was fully converted to renewable diesel, helping reduce the fleet emissions by 97%.
