South Shore Line officials yesterday opened a new 11th Street Station and parking structure in Michigan City, Indiana.

The South Shore Line is an electric commuter-rail service operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) between downtown Chicago and South Bend, Indiana.

The station's completion marks a milestone in the Double Track Northwest Indiana project, a joint transit oriented development between the South Shore Line, Michigan City, Indiana, and Flaherty & Collins Development Inc. The project is designed to revitalize Michigan City's downtown, South Shore Line officials said in a press release.

The new parking structure holds 542spaces, including 437 priority spots for NICTD passengers during peak traffic hours. The station building offers a seating area, restrooms, vendor spaces and a historic exhibit showcasing the history of the South Shore Line and an interactive model train display.

While the new 11th Street Station platforms have been available since early 2024, the building and structure remained under development until yesterday. The Double Track project, which has been in planning and development since 2016, is funded by the Federal Transit Administration, NICTD, Indiana, the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Commission and local municipalities.
