The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) was awarded $100 million in state funding to expand the Bay Area Regional Transportation Silicon Valley Phase II (BSVII).

The investment will go toward improving mobility throughout the San Francisco Bay Area by using electric rail, VTA officials said in a press release.

The award is a significant contribution to filling the funding gap for the project. The funding comes from two programs, $25 million from the 2025 Local Partnership Competitive Program, which supports mobility and transportation challenges; and $75 million from the 2025 Solutions for Congested Containers Program, which prioritizes projects that promote sustainable and equitable transportation solutions.

The BSVII project will extend BART by 6 miles into downtown San Jose and Santa Clara, California. The project is estimated to cost $12.7 billion, VTA officials said.
