New York MTA considers Staten Island service improvements

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is considering ways to improve transit service on the north shore of Staten Island.
Options include heavy rail, light rail and bus rapid transit service. Rail alternatives would use the former Staten Island Railway North Shore Branch right of way, which has remained largely untouched since passenger service ended in 1953 and freight service ceased in 1989.
MTA will study various alternatives and seek public comments. The authority expects to narrow down the list of alternatives by analyzing such factors as cost, impact and potential ridership. The study is expected to take 12 to 14 months to complete, at which time MTA would issue a recommendation.
