On Nov. 13, New Jersey Transit’s board approved a $13 million Park/Ride Expansion program that includes building 840 new parking spaces and initiating design for more than 3,300 additional spaces at 16 locations by June 30.
"It’s unacceptable that New Jersey residents spend years on waiting lists for parking spaces at our rail stations and bus park/ride facilities," said NJ Transit Board Chairman and State Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox in a prepared statement.
Currently, about 87,000 parking spaces are available to NJ Transit commuters daily. Of those, the agency owns 45 percent on the rail system (24,500 spaces), 3 percent on the bus system, and all the spaces (2,760) on the light rail system.
Over the next two years, NJ Transit plans to add nearly 7,000 parking spaces, which would increase system-wide parking availability 8 percent and NJ Transit-owned spaces, 25 percent.
Longer term, officials plan to add between 10,000 and 20,000 spaces during the next five years.
