The National Transportation Safety Board this week opened the public docket for its ongoing investigation into a fatal accident that occurred last year during a switching operation at a BNSF Railway logistics hub in Richmond, California.

On April 4, 2025, an American Auto Works conductor for ConGlobal (CG) was killed during switching operations as part of a job at BNSF's automotive distribution facility located on the Class I's Stockton Subdivision in Richmond, according to the NTSB's preliminary report of its investigation.

The CG switching crew — consisting of a conductor, a brakeman and an engineer — was performing a shoving movement with two locomotives and five rail cars on yard track 405, when the conductor became pinned between two rail cars that the switching crew was attempting to couple.

The investigation is ongoing. Future investigative activity will focus on crew communications; human performance; rules compliance; internal and external safety oversight; and operating procedures, NTSB officials said.

Parties to the investigation include the Federal Railroad Administration, California Public Utilities Commission and ConGlobal.
