New Jersey Transit's board yesterday authorized a $250 million contract for initial construction elements of the Raritan River Bridge replacement project in New Jersey, and a $4.1 million contract for preliminary design of the central concourse extension at Penn Station in New York City.
The board approved a contract with George Harms Construction Co. Inc. to construct bridge approach spans, lift bridge and flanking spans piers and perform associated land work for the first phase of construction of the Raritan River bridge replacement project.
Built in 1908, the bridge is the sole rail link for 17 of the 20 stations on the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) between Jersey Shore recreation destinations and Newark, Jersey City and Manhattan. The NJCL serves 11,400 daily riders and accommodates Conrail freight-rail service, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.
The existing bridge sustained significant damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The bridge replacement will occur in three phases and cost $595 million to complete.
Also yesterday, the board entered into a contract with FXCollaborative Architects for preliminary design, engineering and construction assistance of a project to extend the central concourse at Penn Station.
The extension will provide more rider access to platforms and improve pedestrian flow at the station. The project is being completed with Amtrak, the station’s owner.
NJ Transit will define the project and advance the design to 30 percent, continuing the focus on the structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing impacts, construction impacts and architectural feasibility. Amtrak must review and approve the project's design and engineering.
