Minnesota light rail contractor may be RailWorks

RailWorks Corp. announced Sept. 8 that it is the apparent bidder-of-choice for the electrical and trackwork portions of Minneapolis’ Hiawatha Light Rail Line. Negotiating as part of the Minnesota Transit Constructors team, RailWorks could receive more than $100 million in future project revenues.
"This project represents the first new start to be funded under TEA-21," RailWorks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Larkin said in a prepared statement.
The line would extend 11.4 miles from downtown Minneapolis through Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to the Mall of America in nearby Bloomington, Minn.
The trackwork portion of the contract would include embedded, ballasted, direct-fixation track and special trackwork; the electrical portion would include site improvements, traction power system, catenary, signaling and grade crossing protection.
Design work is scheduled to begin in fall, with construction following in late summer or early fall 2001, continuing through 2004.
