The Detroit Transportation Corp. (DTC) has been awarded a $10 million grant through Michigan’s Infrastructure Projects Authority Fund (IPAF) to update its elevated light-rail trains.
The grant will be used to replace the system’s nine aging rail cars with 12 refurbished vehicles originally used by the Toronto Transit Commission, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced in a press release. The investment will fund the evaluation, reconditioning, systems integration and certification of the refurbished vehicles, building on work already completed by the DTC.
The DTC's Automated People Mover light-rail system serves about 1.25 million riders annually and provides connections to the QLINE streetcar and other regional transportation services.
DTC is one of 18 grant recipients of a larger $65 million IPAF grant package to support public transportation projects across the state.
The IPAF was established as part of Michigan’s fiscal-year 2026 budget and provides dedicated, long-term capital for public transportation. The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
MDOT will also create a new position to help coordinate transit and rail operations across the state, according to the press release. The role will be followed by additional action to enhance coordination across state government to support transit and multimodal transportation.
