Metro-North awards Bombardier $322 million EMU contract

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Metro-North Commuter Railroad Aug. 30 awarded Bombardier Transportation a $322 million contract to supply 180 electrical multiple unit (EMU) M-7 commuter cars to replace its M-1 car fleet.

The M-7 vehicles include insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) propulsion, dynamic braking, and on-board monitoring and diagnostic systems. Bombardier plans to build the stainless steel carbodies at its La Pocatiere, Quebec, plant, then proceed with final manufacturing and assembly at its Plattsburgh, N.Y. facility.

With the current order, Metro-North’s M-7 contract totals 858 cars, including 666 option cars. If all options were to be exercised, the total contract would be valued at $1.86 billion.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2004.
