The Twin Cities' Metro Transit agency on Tuesday began testing vehicles on its Green Line light-rail extension.
The test trains are being towed 5 mph by a rail-car mover while feelers measure clearance along the 14.5-mile extension from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Metro Transit officials said in a press release.
Throughout the week, light-rail vehicles are being towed to Eden Prairie in preparation for test runs. Construction on the Green Line extension is about 85% complete. Testing and operator training will continue through 2027, when passenger service will begin on the extension.
Planning for the extension has been underway since 2010, and construction started in 2019, according to the Metro Transit Green Line extension webpage. Metro Transit has ordered 27 new light-rail vehicles for the extension.
The Green Line currently runs 11 miles between downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis. Once the extension is completed, passengers will be able to ride the Green Line from Eden Prairie to downtown St. Paul.
