Rail News: Passenger Rail
Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) recently broke ground on a $3 million station at the Schaumburg stop on the Milwaukee West Line.
Located 27 miles from the line’s downtown Chicago terminus, the current station will be replaced with a larger facility. The 18-month project includes constructing a new 3,600-square-foot depot, resurfacing the platform and installing tactile warning strips, and improving platform lighting. The station also will include a commuter shelter, ticket office and vendor space.
The project is being funded by the Federal Transit Administration, Illinois Department of Transportation, village of Schaumburg and Metra.
The Schaumburg station is the line’s busiest stop and the 16th busiest of Metra’s 225 stations, averaging 1,600 weekday boardings.
