Metra is seeking suggestions from riders on which amenities the Chicago commuter-rail service should include in its new rail cars.

Earlier this year, Metra issued a request for proposals for at least 200 new cars with options for 300 more. As the agency negotiates with manufacturers, it will look for rail-car designs that increase capacity and optimize passenger amenities such as lighting, seat features, information screens and USB chargers, Metra officials said in a press release.

To gauge which amenities are most desired by its riders, Metra has created a survey at to gather input on preferred designs. The survey closes in mid-January.

Metra expects to commit nearly $1.2 billion over the next five years toward rail-car and locomotive purchases and rehabilitation work.
