The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is seeking contractors to design, construct and rehabilitate the Chambers Street subway station, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Aug. 7.
The comprehensive project calls for performing structural repairs, water leak mitigation and ceiling improvement work, replacing or modifying station stairs and doors, installing new lighting, updating the CCTV system and refinishing floors.
The station, which opened in 1913, is one of the most historic stations in MTA's system and is on the U.S. Department of the Interior's register of National Historic Places. The renovation work will preserve and restore the station's significant architectural details, including distinctive mosaic tilework, concrete and marble bases and terra cotta decorations, MTA officials said in a press release.
The project is part of the MTA's 2020-2024 capital plan and is funded through congestion pricing, which has generated $15 billion for the plan since being instituted in January 2025.
“Chambers Street has stood for decades as a living monument of generations of underinvestment in our transit system," said Hochul. "Now, thanks to funding from congestion pricing, that finally changes.”
