Rail News: Passenger Rail
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently announced plans to install an Automated Train Operating system on the Orange Line between Chinatown and Oak Grove.
Scheduled to begin March 28, the project includes replacing the authority’s existing 25-year-old system, and installing new switch machines, train-stop devices, track circuits, signal rooms and cabling. The new system will be compatible with the existing signal system on the Southwest Corridor (Orange Line-South). The project is expected to improve system reliability and capacity, and enable MBTA to increase operational flexibility, according to a prepared statement.
The authority contracted joint venture J.F. White Contracting Co. and SYSTRA Consulting Inc. to complete the four-year project.
