Rail News: Passenger Rail
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently began replacing three bridges along the Fairmount commuter-rail corridor in Dorchester.
The authority will demolish the existing super- and sub-structures of each bridge, and build new support systems. MBTA also plans to construct new retaining walls along the right of way. The project is scheduled to be complete in summer 2010.
During the past decade, MBTA has spent $90 million on its bridge management program. In the next five years, the authority plans to spend another $75 million on bridge repair and replacement projects. MBTA owns 471 bridges, including 282 on commuter-rail lines.
