The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) on March 28 will flip the switch on its updated "Breeze" fare payment system.

The improved Breeze system will feature tap-to-pay technology, enabling passengers to pay directly at faregates using bank cards or mobile wallets, according to a MARTA press release. Other upgrades include new touchscreen ticket vending machines and more secure faregates at MARTA's transit-rail stations.

MARTA will also roll out new Breeze cards and an app. Both old and new Breeze systems will be active from March 28 to May 2, when riders can use old Breeze cards to pay at existing fare equipment, but old ticket vending machines will be turned off starting on March 28.
