Jump in CATS' May ridership spurs expansion talks

In May, the Charlotte Area Transit System's (CATS) LYNX Blue Line registered 450,000 riders, up 9 percent compared with May 2009 ridership.
The National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Charlotte helped spur ridership, CATS officials said in a prepared statement.
The system has registered more than 12.5 million trips to date, according to CATS.
“In our first year of service we already surpassed the anticipated weekday daily ridership for 20 years into the future,” said CATS Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Flowers. “Since we have had such great success we are looking at extending our platforms on the existing Blue Line to accommodate additional trains for our customers. We are also planning on operating three-car trains on the future LYNX Blue Line extension.”
