The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on Dec. 5 issued guidance for public transportation agencies on how to handle transportation during major events..
Available to download here, the "Major Event Playbook" offers key considerations for transit agencies providing transportation services during major events in their jurisdictions, FTA officials said in a press release.
The document contains instructions on how to assess a transit agency's current capabilities and determine the need for supplemental services. While industry associations and private sector companies may offer recourses for operational best practices, few focus on regulatory requirements such as safety, security and accessibility standards. The playbook aims to fill that knowledge gap, FTA officials said.
Over the next 10 years, the United States will host at least major international sporting events, including the 2026 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and a celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary.
"For these events to be a success, transit must be the game plan, not the backup plan," FTA Administrator Marcus Molinaro said in the playbook's opening letter.
