The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently signed off on the supplemental final environmental impact statement for Metro Transit’s Blue Line light-rail extension in Minneapolis.
“This approval follows several years of in-depth environmental studies and community engagement, and allows the project to advance to final design phases, funding application and construction,” Metro Transit officials said in a press release.
The projects calls for building a 13.4-mile light-rail line to connect downtown Minneapolis to North Minneapolis, Robbinsdale, Crystal and Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The extension will include 13 stations.
To support residents and businesses before, during and after construction, Metro Transit will offer a $5 million business support program that will provide eligible construction-impacted businesses up to $30,000 in rent assistance; and a $5 million community investment fund to provide rent and housing cost assistance.
“This is the first time this type of support for residents and businesses impacted by construction has been included in a major project in Minnesota,” said Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando.
Once the FTA approves a full funding grant agreement for the project, Metro Transit expects to launch a public engagement process in fall to review the support programs and ensure they’re providing maximum benefits to residents and businesses.
