East Coast agencies plan Try Transit Week activities

National Try Transit Week kicked off Sept. 9 with several agencies planning activities to encourage would-be riders to leave their cars at home.

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority plans to begin the week-long celebration at Market East Station, where General Manager John Leary Jr. will be presented with a $36 million TransitChek from Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission officials to celebrate the employee commuter benefit plan’s 10th anniversary.

The remainder of the week, SEPTA officials plan to hold Transit Fairs and On-Site Sessions at several stations, providing information, refreshments, raffles and giveaways. Also Sept. 11, SEPTA officials plan to dedicate Woodbourne Station’s new 520-space parking facility.

Meanwhile, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority plans to host several transit-related activities, including live music and farecard giveaways at King Street Metro Station and a groundbreaking ceremony for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ agency headquarters adjacent to the future New York Avenue Metro Station.

New Jersey Transit Corp.’s Try Transit Week activities include transporting all 51 Miss America contestants Sept. 10 from Amtrak’s 30th Street Station in Philadelphia to Atlantic City, N.J., where the pageant is scheduled to be held Sept. 22.
