The Mexican government — through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport — has begun the construction of the Arroyo El Sauz-Nuevo Laredo passenger-rail section of the Gulf of Mexico Train.
The project's launch was celebrated within the framework of Railroad Workers Day, government officials said in a Nov. 7 press release.
Spanning 84 miles, the project is part of the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo route of a new freight- and passenger-rail line under construction in northern Mexico. The passenger-rail journey from Monterrey to Nuevo Laredo will take just under two hours, and from Saltillo, three-and-a-half hours.
When completed, the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo route will feature three stations: Nuevo Laredo, Anahuac and Lampazos. This will allow for long, intermediate and short routes to meet the demand of the metropolitan areas connecting them with work and residential regions in Monterrey and Saltillo, Andres Lajous Loaeza, head of Mexico's Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, said in the press release.
The El Sauz-Nuevo Laredo section of the passenger-rail route also will feature 52 railway bridges, 108 drainage works and 42 vehicular crossings.
