Under a new CA$4.7 billion agreement, Alstom will design and manufacture 313 new Adessia commuter-rail cars for VIA Rail Canada and provide 15 years of technical support and spare parts services.
The rail cars will support VIA Rail's new Long Distance, Regional and Remote (LDRR) fleet, replacing the passenger railroad's 77-year-old long-distance fleet. The LDRR cars will serve eight major routes connecting nearly 400 communities across Canada, Alstom officials said in a press release.
Design and engineering activities will be carried out at Alstom's facility in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, car-body manufacturing will be done in La Pocatiere, Quebec, and final assembly will take place in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Alstom officials said. The contract is expected to create or support up to 670 direct jobs at Alstom Canada.
The new LDRR fleet will be available in nine different car configurations to support the needs of long distance, regional and remove travel, including coach, sleeper, accessible, berth, prestige, panorama, dome, dining and baggage cars.
